The giraffe, the world’s tallest mammal, is under threat.

Giraffes have experienced a population decline of around 40% between 1985 and 2015 and sadly it continues. Giraffes have been hunted extensively for their meat, but today their main threat is the loss of habitat through deforestation, and human and agricultural expansion.

How your giraffe adoption helps

The Aspinall Foundation recently rescued four giraffes, giving them a better life while helping the species. As part of a larger, multi-species rescue mission, the giraffes were discovered in terrible condition at Blaauwbosch Private Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa. They had been left in an overstocked fenced area without water during a sustained period of drought. With the animals facing certain death, The Aspinall Foundation, in conjunction with Wild911, relocated them to protected areas, where they could thrive.

Giraffes in Kent

Our partner park, Port Lympne Reserve, is home to a breeding herd of giraffes.  See them for free with your adoption (except Bronze).

Fun facts about giraffes

  • Although giraffes have a neck approximately 2 metres long, they have the same number of neck vertebrae as humans and many other mammals – just 7! They are just extremely elongated.
  • A giraffe’s neck is too short to reach the ground. To drink, they first have to splay their forelegs and/or bend their knees.
  • Giraffe feet are the size of a dinner plate with a diameter of 30c.
  • They can run up to 35mph over short distances and cruise comfortably at 10 miles an hour.
  • Their tongue is black/blue in colour to help prevent it from getting sunburnt while eating.
  • A giraffe's legs alone are taller than many humans—about 6 feet.
