Key Facts about Panthera leo leo

    Natural range: North Africa
Height: 1 metre at the shoulder
    Weight: 200kg
    Diet: Carnivore

The Barbary lion was once found across North Africa, but has been tragically extinct in the wild since the last known specimen was shot in Morocco in 1922. In the past, Barbary lions were hunted and trapped for use in Roman gladiatorial games and for display in menageries, including that of The Tower of London.

In modern times, Barbary lions can only be found in captivity. Adras, the stunning male lion at Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve, is a Barbary lion.
Male Barbary lions can be distinguished from other subspecies by their paler eyes and longer, heavier mane which extends along the belly.
